Why they stain when crushed
When threatened or crushed, Asian lady beetles release a defense mechanism called reflex bleeding — a drop of yellow-orange hemolymph (insect blood) that's meant to taste bad to predators. On light-colored vinyl or painted siding, that fluid leaves a small stain and a musty smell that lingers if it isn't cleaned off. A few beetles are a non-issue; a heavy swarm crushed against a sunny wall over a season can leave visible spotting across the whole exposure.
Removing the stains without making it worse
Vacuuming or brushing live beetles off dry siding tends to crush more of them in the process, which spreads the stain and the odor rather than solving it.
