What a gutter cleaning with us includes

• Hand-cleared troughs. Leaves, maple seeds, roof grit, and shingle granules come out by hand into a bag. Not blown onto your roof, not flushed down the downspout to jam it, not raked onto the lawn for you to deal with.
• Every downspout flushed and proven. A downspout is either clear or it isn't, and the only way to know is to run water through it and watch the bottom. We run each one. A blocked elbow gets opened rather than reported.
• Debris removed from site. It leaves in the truck.
• Photos of the troughs before and after — you can see what came out without climbing a ladder.
• Gutter-face brightening (add-on) — the black "tiger stripes" on the front of white gutters.

Why clogged gutters cost more here than almost anywhere

A gutter is a small thing protecting expensive things. When it clogs, water overflows the back edge — behind the fascia, into the soffit, and straight down against the foundation. Three separate repairs, all of them four figures, all of them caused by leaves.

Then Michigan adds winter. Clogged gutters are a leading cause of ice dams: meltwater runs down the roof, hits a trough already packed with frozen debris, has nowhere to go, backs up under the shingles, and refreezes there. Once water is under the shingle line it goes into the attic and down the interior walls. That is a roof repair, an insulation replacement, and a drywall job from a gutter that cost less than dinner to clear.

This is why the late-fall cleaning is the one that actually matters. A gutter cleared in September and packed again by November is a gutter that was never cleaned as far as winter is concerned.

How often — and the two windows that count

Twice a year fits most West Michigan homes, and the timing is the whole game:

• Late spring, after the maple helicopters and pollen finish dropping — usually late May into June. Maple seeds are the ones that germinate in the trough; a gutter with things growing in it has been full for a while.
• Late fall, after the leaves are down and before the first hard freeze. Miss this one and you're buying the ice-dam risk for the whole winter.

Homes under heavy canopy — Rockford, Ada, Cascade, the older tree-lined streets in Grand Rapids and Jenison — often need three or four visits. A house on an open lot with no overhanging trees can genuinely go once a year.

The black stripes on the front aren't rust

Those vertical black streaks down the face of white gutters — "tiger striping" — are not rust, not permanent, and not a sign the gutters need replacing. They're an oxidized film of the same road grime and organic residue that washes off the roof, deposited on the gutter face by water overflowing the front lip. Painting over them doesn't work; they come back through.

They come off with a surfactant wash of the gutter exterior. It's the single cheapest thing you can do to make a house look maintained from the street, and it's the difference between gutters that work and gutters that look right. It pairs naturally with a house wash, since we're already cleaning the wall directly beneath them.

Gutter guards, and the honest answer about them

Guards reduce how much gets in. They do not make gutters self-cleaning, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling guards. Fine grit, shingle granules, pine needles, and seed casings still get through most designs and pack down in the trough, and on some styles the debris then builds up on top of the guard where rain can't wash it off.

What guards genuinely change is the interval — a guarded home under moderate canopy often goes from twice a year to once. If you have guards, tell us when you book: the job is different (panels come up and go back), and we'll quote it that way rather than surprise you.

Order of operations if you're booking more than one thing

Gutters come after the roof and before the walls. A roof soft wash sends solution and loosened growth straight down into the troughs, so the roof goes first; gutter debris and flush water run down the siding, so a house wash goes after. Booked together it's one trip and one flat number — booked separately with different companies, you tend to pay for the same surface twice.
